Managing Risks: Safety and Security in Human Rights Work Module 1: The Risk Management Process Overview of the risk management process

In this video, you will:

  • Understand what risk management process is and what each stage entails
  • Discover the benefits of proactive risk management and how it strengthens security and resilience
  • Be able to apply the PROBLEM, SOLUTION, and REPEAT approach to the risk management process
  • Understand who is responsible for carrying out the risk management process
Main takeaways:
  • Risk management helps you to assess your situation, focus on the problems you really have, and avoid spending resources on the problems that you do not need to prioritize.
  • Risk management is generally the responsibility of management, and it should not be solely delegated to staff members or external consultants. In the absence of an organizational structure, the duty of the risk management falls on the individual.
  • Risk management is a systematic, cyclical process, with the PROBLEM, SOLUTION, and REPEAT approach. It is divided into five stages: first, identification and prioritization of the main risks or problems; second, deciding how to deal with each of the risks and problems; third, implementation of the decisions that were made in the second stage; fourth, monitoring and evaluation of the process; fifth, repeating the risk management cycle.
  • Throughout the process, be mindful of your assumptions and biases, respecting the concept of intersectionality. Remember that the process should be collaborative and inclusive, bringing in diverse perspectives and experiences, hence tailoring the process to your specific context. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to security. Different contexts mean different risks, different decisions, and different measures.
