Welcome to Episode 2 of Starlight Stadium! This episode will take you through the Information Gathering stages of ODIHR’s Human Rights Monitoring Cycle. Enjoy, and thank you for playing!  

Starlight Stadium was developed to integrate learning objectives that cover the entire human rights monitoring methodology – these objectives can be reviewed here.

The learning objectives for Episode 2 are as follows:

During the scenes with Mr X, you will:

1. Learn about when to use secure communication channels.
2. Understand the different steps needed to conduct an interview, including planning and preparing for the interview, engaging with the interviewee, and explaining the interview process.
3. Learn about the importance of informed consent.
4. Understand when and how to use open-ended questions.

During the scenes with Toni, you will: 

1. Learn how to select a secure and comfortable location and consider who should be present.
2. Learn about the PEACE model of interviewing. 
3. Encourage an uninterrupted narrative with open-ended questions. 
4. Understand how to implement a trauma-informed approach to an interview.
5. Consider the victims’ needs and refer them to an appropriate service provider.

During the direct observation scenes, you will: 

1. Understand the importance of a risk assessment and how to undertake one
2. Learn about the do’s and don’ts for preparing for an on-site observation.
3. Understand how to document not just “what” is happening, but also “who” and “how”.

Starlight Stadium serves as a method through which players can learn about human rights monitoring and apply what they’ve learned to a simulated monitoring mission. Human rights monitoring is complex, and although care has been put in the game to include nuances that exist within human rights defenders’ environments, please remember that this game is a simplification of reality, and that your situation as a human rights defender may differ from the situations presented in Balronia.
